People often assume a Facebook video has one fixed quality. It does not. A single post can exist on Facebook's servers in several renditions at once, and the one you end up saving depends on decisions made long before you ever pasted the link.
Facebook re-encodes everything that is uploaded
When a video is posted, Facebook does not store the original file and serve it back untouched. It transcodes the upload into a ladder of renditions, typically a low, medium and high variant, so the player can switch between them depending on the viewer's connection. The ceiling of that ladder is set by the source file. If someone uploaded a 480p clip recorded years ago, no rendition above 480p will ever exist, and no tool can invent detail that was never captured.
This is the single most common reason two links behave differently. The tool is not being inconsistent; the two posts simply have different ladders behind them.
Reels, Watch and feed posts do not behave the same
Facebook treats its video surfaces differently. Reels are vertical and optimised for fast mobile playback, so they are usually capped lower than a landscape video posted to a Page. Videos published through Watch or by publishers with a partner account often carry a taller ladder, sometimes up to 1080p. A clip that was cross-posted from Instagram may already have been compressed once before Facebook compressed it again.
What the labels actually mean
- SD is usually 360p or 480p. Small file, safe on mobile data, visibly soft on a large screen.
- HD is usually 720p. The most common ceiling for ordinary personal posts.
- Full HD is 1080p. Available when the uploader supplied a 1080p or better source, and more common on Pages than on personal profiles.
Why the file size differs even at the same resolution
Resolution is only half the story. Bitrate, meaning how much data is spent per second of video, decides how well that resolution holds up. A 720p clip of a static talking head compresses down to very little, because almost nothing in the frame changes. The same 720p resolution applied to a handheld shot of moving water needs several times the data to avoid turning into blocks. Two files can both say 720p and differ in size by a factor of five, and both are correct.
Practical guidance
If you are saving something to watch on a phone, the SD rendition is usually indistinguishable at arm's length and costs a fraction of the data. Choose the highest option when the clip will be viewed on a laptop or television, when it contains text or fine detail you need to read, or when you may want to re-share it later. Every additional re-upload compresses the file again, so starting from the best available copy matters.
If a link only offers a low option, that is the ceiling of what was published. Checking the same content on the original uploader's Page sometimes surfaces a better rendition, particularly when the version you found was a re-share rather than the original post.
A note on private content
Anything restricted to a friends-only audience or a closed group is not publicly reachable, and no downloader can retrieve it from a link alone. If a video will not resolve, the most likely explanation is that the post is not public, has been deleted, or was removed by the uploader, not that the tool has failed.
